 2003 Features @ENDURANCE MAGAZINE

It was fitting that the first major National Barrel Horse Association event for 2003 would pick up where the last one of 2002 ended - Mississippi.

NBHA members spent “Christmas In Dixie 2002” at the NBHA Holiday Classic in Jackson, Miss., where $85,823 was paid out. They started the 2003 season at the inaugural NBHA Spring Fling, held March 7-9, in Hattiesburg, Miss., where $43,789 went into the pockets of 153 winners.

Hosts for both events were staunch NBHA supporters Billy and Shirley Webb, Florence, Miss., who call their outfit Webb Farms. Added money for the NBHA Spring Fling amounted to $10,000, with $3,000 added to Open Race No. 1, $3,000 to Open Race No. 2, $3,000 added to Open Race No. 3 and $1,000 added to the Youth Race.

Even though the majority of entries were from Mississippi, it was NBHA member Tammy Gadberry, St. Mary, Mo., that left with the biggest paycheck - $1,469. Gadberry finished out of the money in Race No.1, placed second in Race No. 2 for $599, won $463 for third in Race No. 3 and topped the three-run average with a total time of 48.661, worth another $407.

Gadberry’s total set the stage for Gene DeVine, Cantonment, Fla., to win the 2D average with a total on three of 50.165, worth $349. Representing the host state in the winner’s circle was Tiany Schuster, Lumberton, Miss., who won the 3D average aboard Cherokee Gereld with a total on three runs of 51.766 and Dr. Robin Williams, Magee, Miss., who earned the 4D average title riding U. S. Treasury with a total on three runs of 54.854.

Each average winner in the Open received a trophy saddle while the winners in each race, including the Youth, received a trophy belt buckle and a coveted NBHA World Show Wild Card. Tammy Gadberry, an eight-year member of the NBHA and former Missouri State Director, entered the inaugural Spring Fling because of the good added money and the urging of her good friends, the Goveros. Gadberry and her 12-year-old mare, Honor Thy Cash, took an immediate liking to the new Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center.

“Our second run was awesome,” said Gadberry. “It was so smooth; it didn’t even feel like my mare was running. It was really a nice run. I didn’t go to win anything on my third run. All I wanted was a clean run because I knew I was solid for the average.”

Gadberry, owner of a commercial cleaning company, started barrel racing when her daughter Andrea chose barrel racing over team roping.

“When I started riding I got into team roping,” said Gadberry. “I tried to get Andrea interested in it but she wanted to barrel race, so here we are doing it together.”

Gadberry credits a good friend for the opportunity to own her winning barrel horse.

“I needed a barrel horse and a very good friend, Tracy, offered to lease me Cash. I rode her two months and decided to buy her. Thanks to Tracy I have a barrel horse that fits me just right. I am grateful to have such a good friend.

“It was the first time I’d been to a show that Billy Webb had produced and I liked it a lot. It was well run and I’ll definitely go back to more.”

The 2D average winner Gene DeVine, standing 6-foot one inch and weighing 230 pounds, considered himself too heavy to be competitive at the top level of barrel racing until he found his present mount, Spanish Outlaw. The 6-year-old gelding, affectionately called Amigo, took DeVine to his first saddle win at the 2003 NBHA Spring Fling.

“When I bought Amigo, he had a little problem at the first barrel until I got his teeth worked on. He went back to work once we got the teeth problem corrected.”

Besides barrel racing, DeVine is involved with his own gospel ministry. Married to Darlene, also a barrel racer as well as a dental assistant, DeVine credits her with his barrel racing success.

While 3D average champion Tiany Schuster is normally linked with her black beauty Perks Master when it comes to winning championships, at the 2003 Spring Fling it was an American Paint Horse Association gelding, Cherokee Gereld, nicknamed Wayne, that took her to the winner’s circle.

Living only 20 minutes from the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center, Schuster left Perks Master at home to rest for the Speedhorse Derby the following week.

“This Paint gelding is entered in the Speedhorse Futurity and I wanted to bring him here because the arena size is very similar to Tulsa,” said Schuster. “I think it really helped him because he was lost at the first barrel on his first two runs and made a nice run the third run. His owner, Wayne Scarborough, has a 9-year-old daughter who will run him in the Youth events after the Speedhorse Futurity.”

Schuster, a self-employed horse trainer, has already won five trophy saddles in her young career. She hopes to win the APHA Barrel Racing World Championship in Fort Worth this summer on Cherokee Gereld.

The 4D average winner, Dr. Robin Williams, a veterinarian, started running barrels only two years ago at the age of 49. Two years later he’s a trophy-saddle winner.

Williams credits his wife, Shawn, also a veterinarian, with his interest in barrel racing. The two operate the Williams Animal Clinic in Magee, Miss.

Williams rode his 7-year-old APHA gelding, U.S. Treasury, nicknamed “Cody,” to his first saddle win. He credits conditioning, exercise and nutrition for Cody being a winner. A black belt instructor, Williams entered the Spring Fling based on “Billy Webb’s reputation for running a top-notch event.”

“The barrel racing people are an extension of our family,” said Williams. “Adults and kids see healthy competition. Barrel racing is great fun with a great bunch of people. I want to keep on running and improving myself and my horse - it takes two.”

Mississippi NBHA Youth State Champion Hope Holifield, 14, from Seminary, Miss., was one of the happiest winners to leave the 2003 NBHA Spring Fling. Winning the 115-entry Youth race was her first big win since winning the state youth title last May.

Shortly after winning the state title, her mare, Lot A View, affectionately known as Lottie, started ducking in front of the second barrel time after time. After discovering a problem in both front feet, Lottie underwent surgery three months ago. Having only run her once before the Spring Fling, Holifield was delighted with her winning time of 16.102.

Other Youth winners were: 2D, Brianna Donnell, Rosemark, Ill.; 3D, Paige Guin, Starkville, Miss; and 4D, Charlotte Boller, Vancleave, Miss.

With Race No. 1 drawing 262 entries, Race No. 2 having 324 entries, Race No. 3 attracting 286 entries and the Youth Race running 115 entries, a total of 987 entries christened the newly constructed James Lynn Cartlidge/ Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center in Hattiesburg. “We are the third-largest horse facility in Mississippi,” said the highly motivated facility executive director, Chuck Bennett. “We were delighted with the NBHA Spring Fling and the feedback we got from the contestants. We want people to come here and we want them to feel welcome. We weren’t 100 percent completed but we will be by the time the next barrel racing event is held.”

Event producer Billy Webb was also pleased with the inaugural NBHA Spring Fling event. “We didn’t have enough time to advertise the Spring Fling like we normally would,” said Webb, who also serves as the NBHA Mississippi State Director. “Considering the short time we had to put this together, I think the turnout was spectacular. I appreciate Sherry Fulmer and the NBHA National office working with us to get it NBHA approved on rather short notice. I really expect it to grow next year.”

Webb was so impressed with the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Center facility, staff and attitude of the Hattiesburg community that he is giving more than serious consideration to moving the 2003 Mississippi NBHA State Finals, to be held later this year.
