Oman Industrial
Estates:
The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates
(PEIE) was established by Royal Decree
No.4/93 on 3 January 1993 and is today managed
by Mr. Sultan Al Habsi, Executive
President, and a Board of Directors chaired by
HE Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, Oman’s Minister of
Commerce and Industry.
Since 1993, PEIE has been responsible for
developing and managing prime industrial land in
the following eight locations: Rusayl, Raysut,
Sohar, Nizwa, Buraimi, Sur, Al Mazunah Free
Zone, Knowledge Oasis Muscat.
All PEIE estates are suitable for manufacturing,
warehousing, distribution and office space. PEIE
also works closely with the Ministry of Commerce
and Industry, the Oman Chamber of Commerce,
Omani Centre for Investment Promotion and Export
Development (OCIPED), permitting and regulatory
organizations, utility providers and others to
develop the partnerships that assures business
success. Moreover, it assists companies in
assembling sites, developing buildings,
facilitating permitting, assessing
infrastructure needs, reviewing incentives
available for projects as well as helping firms
market and promote
their products.
It’s a matter of pride for Oman that one of its
companies in the non-oil sector has established
itself as a reputed name in the industry
worldwide.
Reem Batteries & Power Appliances Co. SAOC was
the first battery manufacturing company
established in the GCC. It’s testimony to HE Dr.
Omar Zawawi’s foresight and strong conviction,
that he acquired an ailing company and turned it
around to one of the most successful battery
companies in the region. The company tied up
with US-based Johnson Controls Inc. and
re-commissioned the plant in 1992 and today Reem
Batteries is rated as one of the top
manufacturers in West Asia.
It’s also the battery company, with the largest
product range in the world, manufacturing over
200 different types of batteries from a single
facility. The company is one of the largest
non-oil exporters from Oman, with over 85% of
our production exported to 35 countries. Reem
Batteries is also having an ISO 9001 Certified
facility.
Reem Batteries is an SAOC Company, which is
managed by a Board of Directors. Reporting to
the Board is CEO (which is me). Under the CEO,
there are four senior managers heading the
functions of factory operations, global
marketing operations, supply chain logistics and
finance. An Administration Manager reporting to
the CEO independently, heads HRD/Administration.
In addition the HSE and Technical Development
functions are headed by Managers who have
parallel reporting to DGM (Works) and the CEO.
The company has the widest product range in the
entire industry worldwide, manufacturing over
200 different types of automotive batteries,
which are currently exported to over 35
countries around the world. Broadly, the
products are exported to entire Middle East,
South East Asia, Central, West & North Africa,
Eastern Europe, Western Europe including
Scandinavian countries, UK and South America.
Virtually all parts of the globe are
represented.
Broadly, the industry is going through a major
transition wherein larger companies are
consolidating their position through acquisition
of smaller companies in various parts of the
world. Further, from a technology viewpoint, the
major western companies are all moving over to
Sealed Maintenance Free Batteries.
As far as Reem Batteries is concerned, they
continue to remain as single medium size company
and as an industry leader in the region.
