Study in
Cyprus:
Education in
Cyprus, quantity and quality wise, is comparable
to those of the more developed countries. It is
well known that the European Community considers
education as a priority in its investments. This
development has progressed under the influence
of the elements which constitute the Cypriot
reality and the internationally accepted
principle that education is not only a basic
human right, but also a significant productive
investment in humanity. As for quantity
expansion, there is a large increase in the
pupil population, especially in secondary
education.
The most important recent development in the
educational sector is the establishment of the
University of Cyprus as of September, 1992, with
which the completion of the Cyprus Educational
System has been achieved. Other important
changes which have marked recent years are:
compulsory education, according to the law,
until 15 years of age, the establishment of the
nine year basic education, the enrichment of the
syllabus with classes in technology and
information technology, the broadening of
specialities in technical education, the
introduction of the Common Examinations in the
last class of the Lykeion, and the approval of
regulation for the evaluation and certification
of the private schools in tertiary education.
