Mystery dinner theater at Tacoma Community College - April 28 2005 – Tacoma, Wash. – The Northwest Murder Mystery Dinner Theater production 2x4xDeath will be staged at 5:30 p.m. April 28 in Tacoma Community College’s Opgaard Student Center. Proceeds benefit the tsunami relief effort.

In this whodunit, Woody Hammer, owner of Woody Timbers, is victimized by his greedy wife, betrayed by Canadian lumberjacks, and threatened by a radical group of tree-huggers led by his daughter. RCMP Stanley Parker is on hand to investigate wrongdoing.

Tickets are $20 general, $15 students, $7 children (children 5 and under free). Early ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets are available at the TCC Cashier’s office, located inside the TCC Bookstore.

This event is part of the 2004-2005 Artist and Lecture Series, presented by the Associated Students of Tacoma Community College. The public is welcome to attend.

TCC’s Opgaard Student Center is located in Building 11 on the college’s main campus, 6501 S. 19th St., Tacoma. The TCC Bookstore is also located in the Opgaard Student Center. For more information, call 253.566.5118.

Annual Surgical Demonstration Day April 29 on the college’s main campus:

– Tacoma, Wash. – Tacoma Community College will present its annual Surgical Demonstration Day April 29 on the college’s main campus. More than 300 observers from local high schools and colleges are expected to attend. The TCC Biology Department is organizing the event in partnership with Multicare Health System, Franciscan Health System and the Madigan Army Hospital Surgical Department.

TCC students in the Human Cadaver Prosection course will explain anatomy and demonstrate surgical procedures they have learned from Madigan surgeons. This year’s presentations will be cardiac anatomy; female reproductive structures; carpal tunnel anatomy; and veins of the leg. There will also be a presentation of a whole cadaver.

The annual event is a rare opportunity for students, said Mike Flodin, dean for sciences at TCC. Few community colleges use human cadavers in anatomy classes.

Professionals in the field, college students and high school students enrolled in anatomy and advanced biology classes are invited to observe the demonstrations. To reduce crowding and allow for better viewing, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. is reserved for college students and professionals in the field. High school students are invited from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There will be two changes to the event from past years. All guests will be asked to check in at the Welcome table when they arrive. There will also be specific start times for each demonstration, which will be provided in a program available the day of the event.

Alicia Carr, a 2004 Surgical Demonstration Day presenter, said, “I thought the demonstrations were very beneficial to everyone who came. It was a good way for students studying anatomy and physiology to get hands-on experience. There is no better way to learn something than doing hands-on work.”

Maggie Ott, also a 2004 Surgical Demonstration Day presenter, said, “It was very educational. Getting a look inside the body and interacting with groups of people were valuable experiences.”

Multicare Health System and Franciscan Health System are providing financial support for the event, and Madigan Army Hospital surgeons are donating their time to train the TCC student presenters.

Schools expected to bring students to observe the event include Central Kitsap High School, Centralia Community College, Clover Park Technical College, Curtis High School, Foster High School, Franklin Pierce High School, Gig Harbor High School, Grays Harbor Community College, Olympic High School, Seattle University, Spanaway High School and Steilacoom High School.

The demonstrations will be held in Building 14 on TCC’s main campus, 6501 S. 19th St., Tacoma. Parking is available in the unmarked spaces on the west side of the campus, accessed off of Mildred Street.

Spectators must RSVP to 253.566.5060 or online at http://www.tacoma.ctc.edu/inst_dept/science/surgical.shtm.
