Abu Dhabi International
Book Fair 31 March - 7 April 2007
New look for the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 31 March - 7 April
2007-
The 17th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair which, for
the first time, is being run in
collaboration with the Frankfurt Book Fair. Its aim is
to provide a gateway to the
rapidly growing Arab book market in one of the most
vibrant and progressive countries
in the Middle East.
This collaboration between the Abu Dhabi International
Book Fair and the Frankfurt
Book Fair represents the beginning of an ongoing
strategy to reposition Abu Dhabi as
the leading marketplace for the publishing and book
distribution business in the
Middle East and North Africa. Abu Dhabi will be able to
draw on Frankfurt’s experience
in the international rights business and its
organisational strengths and professional
expertise.
The relocation to a new state-of-the-art purpose-built
venue, the Abu Dhabi National
Exhibition Centre, the world-class exhibition and
conference centre, is a very
significant chapter for the capital city.
A wide range of professional seminars and an extensive
speaker programme featuring top
industry leaders and authors from around the world, will
be organised by the Frankfurt
Book Fair team.
A dedicated children’s publications area, and a special
focus on state-of the art
technology for publishing, production and distribution,
a complete catalogue of
exhibitors and trade visitors and presentation of the
new Sheikh Zayed Book Award are
another attractions.
The professional seminar and speaker programmes, free to
exhibitors and visitors and
all with simultaneous translation, are designed for
publishers, agents, writers, and
librarians. Their principal purpose is to provide
information on the expanding
publishing market in the Middle East, help forge the
international partnerships that
will drive this growth and facilitate a global exchange
of ideas through books and
other media.
During the Fair, the new Sheikh Zayed Book Award, worth
$US1.9 million, will be
presented. The prize will recognise outstanding
individuals whose work has enriched
the cultural, literary and social life of the Arab
world.
Recent economic growth in the Arab world, with the
booming economy, rich local culture
and political stability of Abu Dhabi at its centre,
means there is a rapidly expanding
market for educational resources, from primary school
level right up to higher and
vocational education, as well as for technological and
scientific materials. There is
also a huge potential for books in translation -
currently only approximately 330
works are translated into Arabic each year, a language
which is spoken by 300 million
people.
Jumaa al-Qubaisi, Director of the Abu Dhabi
International Book Fair, welcomes the
partnership with Frankfurt Book Fair’s as a dynamic way
forward. Abu Dhabi is
recognised as the hub of publishing in the Arab World,
and the Abu Dhabi Book Fair is
established as a leading international event.
Frankfurt Book Fair Director Juergen Boos comments:
“We are extremely pleased to be working with Abu Dhabi
on what will be a wonderful
culmination of culture and commerce. This partnership is
a natural progression in
Frankfurt Book Fair’s international expansion, and
follows on from our success with
Cape Town Book Fair last year. As an international
provider we hope to create
increased cohesion in the global publishing community.
Abu Dhabi is an ideal location for a major fair thanks
to its unique location,
international appeal and growing interest in world
culture.”
