Malaysian Research Universities...

Malaysia in a multi-ethnic country with a population comprised of roughly one-half
Malays, who are ethnically similar to their neighboring Indonesians. Nearly all the
ethnic Malays are Muslim, and recently Malaysia was declared a Muslim state. More
than a third of the country’s population is of Chinese descent, and are largely the
descendants of workers brought to the Malaysian peninsula by the British to work the
tea and rubber plantations, and tin mines (Malaysia Ministry of Culture, Arts, &
Tourism, 1996).

Malaysia's Leading Research University, Universiti Putra Malaysia(UPM), is the Garden
of Knowledge, was officially established on 21 May 1931. Universiti  Putra Malaysia

their studies. The University is a leading Centre of Learning and Research, contributing not only towards human advancement and discovery of knowledge but also to the creation of wealth and nation building.

little mention of traditional music: 2 out of 67 undergraduate courses (UPM Akademic
Kalendar, 1999) in the curriculum of the music department at the Universiti Putra
Malaysia (UPM).

From its humble beginnings,UPM has continued to develop and has become

one of the distinguished universities in the region. Commencing as an agricultural-based university, UPM has expanded its frontiers in various disciplines such as engineering, medical sciences, pure sciences, economics, management, education, languages, communication and other fields. These fields have synergized and complemented the university's focal area, namely, agro-bio, which encompasses related areas of agriculture and science. The field of tropical agriculture has gained the most prominence.
